The Uganda Police Force has deployed 1000 officers from all its fields including counter terrorism to help in securing pilgrims for the June 3rd Martyrs day celebrations slated for this Saturday at both the Catholic and Anglican shrines Namugongo.

It has also released nine toll free lines that are to be used by the public especially the pilgrims in alerting suspicious criminal elements while at Namugongo.

The numbers to be used are, 0800300107 for the Catholic shrine and 0800300108 for the Anglican site, once called they will alert police on any suspicion or criminality at Namugongo.

The Police Spokesman Asan Kasingye says, there are also auxiliary lines where pilgrims can access services from the, fire brigades, medication, sniffer dogs, traffic and tourism all taken in the interest of  guaranteeing  security to over two million pilgrims from here and abroad expected to attend the martyrs celebrations.

The Regional Police Commanders, District Police Commanders and Police Station Officers in Kampala metropolitan policing area have also held a meeting chaired by Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Frank Mwesigwa where they confirmed of taking precaution for cases of terrorism, general crime and accident threats as pilgrims arrive from various parts of the world to celebrate Uganda martyrs according to the Kira Division Police Commander Richard Asiimwe

This year’s martyrs celebrations at the Catholic Shrine Namugongo is to be animated by Hoima diocese under the theme; stand firm in the faith that we have been taught Colossians 2:7 and close to two million pilgrims are expected to participate in the 131st martyrs celebrations from here and abroad. By today morning 400 pilgrims had been registered coming from Malawi, Congo, Pakwach, Mbarara Diocese, Kabale Diocese, Kasese Diocese and Hoima Diocese according to Fr. Joseph Mukasa Muwonge the chief spokesperson at the Catholic Shrine Namugongo.
