The Uganda Peoples’ Defense Force-UPDF will recruit 2,000 Local Defense Unit-LDU personnel from Northern Uganda and West Nile region and part of the ongoing campaign to improve security in the country.

This is part of the 13,000 that will be recruited across the country. The recruits will be drawn from Gulu, Omoro, Amuru, Nwoya, Nebbi, Zombo, Pakwach, Arua, Koboko, Maracha, Yumbe, Moyo and Adjumani districts.

The recruitment exercise in Northern Uganda will start in Gulu and Omoro on 15th July at Pece War Memorial Stadium, Amuru and Nwoya on 17th and 18th at the district headquarters.

In West Nile recruitment will commence from Nebbi, Zombo and Pakwach on 20th July, Arua on 22nd July, Koboko and Maracha on July 24th, Yumbe on 25th, Moyo on 27th and Adjumani on 29th July at the district headquarters.

The Forth Division Infantry Army Barracks, Caesar Olweny says UPDF will later return to Gulu on July 30th and 31st to recruit more personnel if they do not attain the required numbers.

Lt Col Henry Obbo, the UPDF Land Forces spokesperson said the recruits will be under command and control of the UPDF.

He added that they will undergo four months training and deployed to serve in their respective districts of recruitment.

The new recruitment will add up to 23,500 LDUs across the country following presidential order in 2018 as one of the measures to boost security in the country.
