The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Betty Amongi has stated that Local leaders from Acholi sub-region have consented for the government to survey the contentious land in Amuru to pave way for sugar production.

Addressing the media in Kampala, Amongi says that political, cultural and religious leaders from Acholi met with President Museveni at State House in Entebbe where they agreed on the importance of the Madhvani Group to establish a sugarcane project to stimulate economic growth and development in the region.

This follows a protest where mothers moved half naked along with the support of their local MPs over plans to take the contested land without their consent and compensation.

Amongi insists on the agreement made with over 100 local land owners of 10,000 hectares who will either be compensated in cash or relocated, depending on one’s choice.
