Hearing of the petition challenging the second time SIM card registration verification flopped today in the high court just three days to the May 19th deadline issued by the Uganda communications commission (UCC).

The case was to be heard and determined today however high court Deputy Registrar Alex Ajiiji informed court that the trial Judge Justice Steven Musota was indisposed.

A nongovernmental organization Trumpet Uganda limited led by human rights activist Norman Tumuhimbise dragged UCC to high court challenging the on-going SIM card registration using only the National identification card from other official documents like driving permits issued by government which they say is a violation of their rights and the one week ultimatum which is said to have been overtaken by events since government extended the registration exercise for a month.

UCC is also being faulted for only allowing foreigners to use the driving permits as their official registration documents, failure to set up more registration centers for Ugandans abroad to have their SIM cards registered and are seeking court to permanently block the ongoing exercise.

The case has been adjourned to this Thursday May 18th.
