The Minimum Wage Advisory Board has finally come up with a proposed national minimum wage of UGX 136,000 after a two year survey.

The board was established in September 2015 with a mandate of carrying a research and within nine months come up with a proposed monthly minimum pay that ensures workers are not exploited, especially those in enterprises without vibrant Labour Unions.

In that period, the board studied the economic relationship between minimum wage, wage distribution, hours worked and poverty eradication, education, training as well as analyzing the probable impact of the minimum wages on investment in Uganda.

It also examined the Uganda’s current wage policy and recommended to Government on the suitable considerations for determining minimum wages.

Delivering their report to the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Janat Mukwaya, the Board Chairman Chris Kanya says in their report, they recommend that the proposed minimum wage would have to be reviewed after two following years once approved by parliament.

However, Mukwaya notes it that the report will be submitted to cabinet for discussion and later tabled before parliament for further considerations and approval.
