Court in Rukungiri District has issued criminal summons against former presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, after he failed to appear in court to answer charges of malicious damage to property, assault of police officers and disobedience of lawful orders.

Grade one magistrate, Andrew Katurubukim, issued the summons this morning after Besigye’s co accused FDC president Patrick Oboi Amuriat, FDC secretary for mobilization Ingrid Turinawe, Darious Tweyambe, Innocent Tashobya, Moses Byamukama and Fred Asiimwe appeared in court over the same charges.

The senior resident state attorney for Rukungiri, Charles Muhereza told magistrate Katurubukim who was sitting in for the trial Chief Magistrate Julius Borore Kyaka that he was ready to proceed with the hearing to present three witnesses before the court.

However the case could not proceed in absence of accused Dr Besigye and Muhereza asked court to issue criminal summons against protest by Besigye’s lawyer, Mark Mwesigye, who said his client was simply delayed on the way.

Both the Criminal summons and the bail that was granted on October 25 last year were extended until April 12.
