Cabinet has set annual operational fees for Bus and Taxi operators in the country.

According to the fees structure, the taxi and bus operators within Kampala will pay Shillings 720,000 and Shillings 2.4 million respectively.

Taxis operating from Kampala to upcountry and between two urban councils will pay Shillings 840,000 annually

This has been disclosed by the Local Governments State Minister, Jennifer Namuyangu while giving a cabinet resolution to the press at the Uganda media center saying the fees were reached after consultation with the President, line ministries, taxi operators and owners.

Namuyangu also disclosed that 60 percent of the money collected from taxi plying the Kampala route will remain with Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA while the remaining money will go to the districts they are heading to.

According to Namuyangu, Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA has to sensitize the operators, the Works and Transport Ministry will ensure the operators are issued with stickers for a give route and the tax body Uganda Revenue Authority-URA will be in charge of collecting the operational fees.

The new developments follow a directive from president, Yoweri Museveni for a reduction of operational fees on commuter taxis operating in Kampala from Shillings 1.44 million to Shillings 700,000 and Shillings 500,000 for those plying upcountry routes although all the taxi drivers have not been paying pending conclusion of consultations.

There are 34,000 taxis and 960 buses in the country, according to Government.
