Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have lashed at government over the proposed Land Amendment Bill and the campaign to lift the 75 year age restriction for presidential candidates in Uganda.

CSOs including; Action Aid Uganda, Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG), Foundation for Human Rights Initiative in Uganda (FHRIU) and Human Rights Network Uganda (HRNU) say that the constitutional Amendments are not in good faith.

The Executive Director FIDA Irene Ovongi Dida, says the government’s action to forcefully acquire land is in contravention with article 26(2b) and 7(i). of the constitution.

On the purported amendment of article 102(b) to lift the age limit for the presidential candidates, Ovongi, revealed that the framers of the 1995 constitution were mindful of Uganda’s history characterized by forces of tyranny, oppression and exploitation.

Meanwhile, Security was stepped up around Masaka Mayor’s gardens ahead of a consultation rally by Members of parliament.

Opposition legislators led by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Winnie Kiiza alongside civil society organizations were launching a campaign against constitutional amendments, with open rallies in Masaka district which police said was not cleared.

The greater Masaka police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi confirms that the MPs were objected to holding rallies at Nyendo Public Primary School in Nyendo-Ssenyange Division and at Lorry Park in the central business area of Masaka town because they are business areas but still much as they had contacted the Inspector General of Police they had not agreed on the venue with the local police of Masaka.
