High Court in Kampala has this afternoon dismissed an application filed by the Uganda Medical Workers Union (UMWU) against Government and the Uganda Medical Association, its head Dr. Ekwaro Obuku, alongside Workers’ MP Dr. Sam Lyomoki over doctors’ strike.

The Union accused UMA and Dr. Ebuku of over stepping their mandate by calling for an illegal industrial action of doctors which has lasted 3 weeks.

The petitioners wanted court to give an interim order stopping the talks on grounds that the medical association doesn’t represent socio-economic interests of the medical workers.

In her ruling, the Deputy Registrar in charge of Civil Matters Sarah Langa said court can’t make a pronouncement on a matter already overtaken by events.

She based the decision on a letter which was presented in court by the respondents dated November 21st signed by State Minister for Finance David Bahati, undertaking to improve the welfare of medical workers.

However, questions on the legality of the negotiations, she said it will be determined in the main application on January 8th 2018.

Meanwhile, the doctors’ association is expecting to have an extraordinary general assembly at Silver Springs hotel, Bugoloobi in Kampala on Saturday where the striking medics are come up with a join resolution from the previous meeting with government over the fate of their industrial action.
