The former FDC presidential candidate Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye was last night blocked from appearing on Voice of Kigezi the same station that hosted President Museveni earlier in the week on his sensitisation trail on the constitutional land amendment bill 2017.

During the show President Museveni cautioned radio stations not to host people that are opposed to government’s planned land related constitutional amendment.

According to his aides, Dr. Besigye was in the Kigezi sub region to rally support for the party candidate for the Rukiga Woman MP, Shillah Alituha But he was also expected on the radio show to make a counter argument against President Museveni’s defence of the largely unpopular land amendment but only to be stopped at the reception yet he had paid for the airtime.

The radio station’s accountant Frank Mutaremwa told Besigye that they had a directive only to host him from the Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Darius Nandinda that he was sure Besigye was to disrepute President Museveni’s information he gave over the same air waves on the land bill. All this happened as Besigye was monitored by Dickens Bindeeba, the Kabale District Police Commander who was in plain clothes.

He said that the act was a clear indication that Museveni’s countrywide land campaign is authoritarian and continues to lack support.

The bill seeks to amend Article 26 of the constitution to provide for the compulsory acquisition of private land for government projects.
