The Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has noted that the controversies and discontentment in the public about the recent constitutional amendments give a clear indication that parliamentary submissions were not for the people.

In his Christmas Message at Rubaga Dr. Lwanga said its clear legislators betrayed their electorate by the age limit and extension of their term of office from 5 to 7 years even contrary to the advice given by the religious leaders of subjecting the matter to a referendum which indicates the bad spirit  under which the amendments were made.

He said as religious leaders they are also concerned by the way some citizens who share divergent views in political spheres are treated to the extent of denying them public utilities.

He mentioned four areas of great concern as Ugandans end 2017; like controversies on the constitutional amendments, strikes of the doctors, teachers and judicial officers, violation of human rights like illegal arrests by security agencies, brutal and unexplained killings in different parts of the country, Food insecurity and land conflicts as problems affecting this country.

Dr.Lwanga says all such challenges call on Ugandans to reflect in their minds on the gospel and country’s motto For God and My Country, that probably they will repent.

He also talked about the family that is under attack due to cultures that come along with new technology, indecency, poverty and unemployment which challenges call for a concerted effort to save the families.

He urged married couples to protect their matrimonial vows and raise children in accordance to the principals of the Catholic Church to help in getting good pastors.

On the issue of abusing the Parliamentary chapel by the security agencies on Tuesday December 19, 2017 when parliament was passing constitutional amendments Dr. Lwanga questioned the intention of hiding security officers while executing national issues adding that once a prayer place is dis-consecrated it should not hold prayers until its consecrated again.
