Makerere University together with government have launched a standard compounding animal feeds produced from dried insect products.

At the launch in Makerere, the Principle Investigator Insfeed Project in Uganda Prof. Dorothy Nakimbugwe told the press that among the 16 insect species they discovered in their research, two of them; the black soldier fly farmer and pioneer insect cricket were better for animal feeds production.

Nakimbugwe says that the kind of insects selected were disease free, don’t pollute the environment, easy to be reared, and are not dangerous to famers when integrating them in Poultry and Fish Feed.

She further explains it requires a number of people to get involved in rearing the insects and later submit them to the School of Food Technology, Nutrition & Bio-engineering, Makerere Universit for processed products.

However, the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UNBS) Deputy Executive Director in charge of Standards Patricia Bageine Ejalu urges youths to engage in such projects because they provide knowledge and job opportunities.
