Electoral Commission has dismissed and identified the Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Paul Mwiru allegations of illegal addition and deletion of names in the voter registers of Jinja East as ‘groundless’.

Mwiru alleges that the voters register has been inflated with 2,072 ghost voters and 305 voters have been wrongly deleted ahead of the forthcoming Jinja East Constituency by-elections.

However, the EC Chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama in a statement this morning said that the claims are ‘false and unfounded.’

According to Byabakama, the total number of voters on the Voters’ Register for Jinja Municipality East Constituency that was displayed between February 12 and 21, this year, was 29,973, derived from the total number of voters for General Elections of 2016 (26,42I) and those registered during the update, 28,493.

The 2,072 voters Mwiru alleges are ghosts, the EC Chairperson says, were a result of continuous registration by National Identity Registration Authority (NIRA) which was done before the update exercise, and in no way will it affect the EC register.
