The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) Secretary General Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo has called on bishops to deeply evaluate the origin and mission of AMECEA for future growth of the church in Africa.

In his presentation on the 3rd day of the 19th AMECEA Plenary in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, Fr. Lugonzo said Association’s founding fathers intended to bring development among conference members with philosophy and global mind of acting locally.

The Secretary General explained that  AMECEA was started at a Plenary held at Msimbazi Centre in Dar es Salaam Tanzania in 1961and was the first Association of its kind in the world which members should be proud of but above all look to fulfilling the seven set agendas for the Church in Africa.

The agendas were; Church and Media by establishing Regional Televisions, Radio Stations and Printing Press to promote evangelization in AMECEA region, Spiritual formation for Diocesan Priests, Need for a Centre for Pastoral Renewal and On-going Formation, though a Regional University or a College which has been achieved, Comprehensive Self-Reliance Program, The Future of Catholic Schools and Catholic Education with a Christian Religious Syllabus and Justice and Peace.

 

In his response, the Archbishop Emeritus of Lusaka, Zambia, His Grace Telesphore Mpundu called for unity among bishops that will build collaboration and spirit of faith especially on Pastoral Renewal,” with emphasis to long term strategy on how to evangelize the people and to involve more laity in church activities.
