The European Union has committed to provide UGX 509 billion Shillings in the next three years to support green economic growth in Uganda.

The EU Delegation’s Head of Cooperation, Cedric Morel, says the focus on the green economy is because it is the route to sustainable and inclusive growth.

Green growth entails achieving economic growth alongside environmental sustainability and inclusive reduction of poverty. Morel says the five strategic sectors to address include agriculture, natural capital, green cities, green transport systems, and renewable energy.

Morel was speaking at the 72nd State of the Nation meeting on green growth economy in Kampala Uganda. The forum is organized by Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment-ACODE, under the theme “Green growth economy in Uganda: strategies for sustainable development and inclusive growth”.

The Commissioner for Environmental Affairs Paul Mafabi,, says that if Uganda does not promote green economic growth now, the cost in the near future will be enormous given the current challenges paused by draught amidst the rising inflation and slow economic growth.
