Former managing director of Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Paul Kihika has been granted a cash bail of 400,000 shillings on charges of giving false information to police by magistrate Christine Nantege of Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court and his sureties sign a non-cash bond of Shs2 million.

The state prosecutor Carol Opia contends that on February 16, Kihika reported a case of theft of his mobile phone by the head of Media Crime Unit Emmanuel Mbonimpa at Jinja Road Police Station whereas the officer had just confiscated it in an investigation of a defamation case against him.

Opio informed court that investigations into Kihika’s case were still on-going and the magistrate adjourned the case to September 5 for further mention.

Kihika is also being investigated on other criminal charges of causing financial loss of Shs3.6 billion to the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation in connection with the UBC-Airtel sponsorship deal to air the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil. Police are also investigating him for alleged embezzlement, abuse of office, false accounting and conspiracy to commit a crime during the execution of the UBC-Airtel World Cup sponsorship deal between 2013 and 2014.
