Government is to decide on whether to scrap both social media and mobile money taxes by Tuesday next week

This has been confirmed by Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda in today’s special plenary sitting after MPs raised it as a matter of national importance.

This means that the status quo remains of paying both taxes the 1% on mobile money and Over the Top service of 200/= to whoever accesses internet.

Ever since the taxes became operational on July 1, Ugandans have opposed it

This follows contradictions from cabinet with the recent statement by President Yoweri Museveni accusing his ministers of finance for proposing taxes that weren’t agreed upon by cabinet and ordered for reduction of the tax on mobile money to 0.5%.

However Kampala City has experienced running battles between the police and groups of concerned citizens led by Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi who demonstrated against the taxes.

Police have fired tear gas and live bullets into the air to disperse protesters causing injuries to some people. Hon. Kyagulanyi is said to have escaped.
