Government is set to come up with tough environmental laws that will also empower the line Minister to declare special conservation areas owned by private individuals.

Addressing the journalists at Uganda Media Center in Kampala, the State Minister for Environment Dr. Mary Kitutu said that the laws include the Climate Change bill and Wetlands bill that are before cabinet as well as the recently passed Environmental law all aimed at protecting ecosystems threatened by population pressure and erosion that affect all those who depend on natural space.

The laws will restrict encroachment on wetlands and forest reserves and will also provide for the establishment of environmental police and with a financial support of 15 billion shillings every year to facilitate the tree planting exercise in the whole country.

She further announces USD24m dollars received by Uganda for reserving wetlands.

The Money which was acquired under the office of the president is part of the bigger fund of over $100billion put aside by developed countries every year through the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) for vulnerable developing countries that are committed to conservation the environment.

According to the Minister, the money will be used for wetland conservation in areas of Pallisa wetlands and River Rwizi in Mbarara.
