Scientists from Makerere University College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) have developed a project of rearing and producing crickets and grasshoppers in Uganda and Kenya titled Insect based Agribusiness (INSBIZ).

The project has been launched by the State Minister for Agriculture Christopher Kibazanga who represented the Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja at Makerere University today.

At the function, the CAES Department of Technology and Nutrition Project Manager, Prof. Dorothy Nakimbugwe said they discovered that the insects have high consumption level in both Kenya and Uganda and if reared and produce for feeds it can have already market in the region.

She adds that both Crickets and grasshoppers contain 60% proteins that are needed for human body growth especially for children than meat, chicken and pork.

However, Minister Kibazanga asked agricultural experts at Makerere to include production of silver fish as government formulates a policy framework to guide the rearing, production and selling of such insects includes bees to avoid spoiling the ecology.
