The Minister for Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has warned that government hospitals might lose out doctors in the next two years once their salaries are not enhanced in the coming financial year 2018/19.

While opening the three day 2nd Grande Medical Doctors Conference at hotel Africana organized by the Uganda Medical Association that is aimed at promoting health living in the country, Dr. Aceng note with concern the salary structure for Ugandan Medics which described as an insult to such professionals compared to what some drivers and cleaners in other government authorities earn

The Minister believes that the medics will have their salaries enhanced in the next financial year given several dialogues engaged in with the authorities.

Dr. Aceng further stated that both the Heart Institute and Cancer Institute at Mulago have already been granted autonomous status while two other specialized facilities – the Lubowa based International Specialized Hospital and the Regional Centre for Pediatrics Surgery in Entebbe are soon to be commissioned.

Once Mulago hospital is granted autonomous status, it will have the powers to determine its staffing levels, salary for its health personnel as well as do its own recruitment.

Meanwhile, Dr. Iga Matovu, a Senior Consultant at Kampala Imaging Center among other Medics operating in private hospitals want the government to withdraw some of the licenses like the professional or trade licenses that have affected their operations.
