Human Rights Network for Journalists in Uganda (HRNJ-U) has suspended its earlier planned demonstration against the arrest of journalists in Arua district ahead of the parliamentary by-election.

This follows the earlier statement from the HRNJ-U Executive Director Robert Ssempala threatening to storm Gulu and Arua districts to ask for the immediate release of more than five journalists arrested in Arua yesterday as they were on duty capturing the incident in which Yasin Kawuma a driver to the Kyadondo East legislature Robert Kyagulanyi was shot dead.

Two NTV journalists, Herbert Zziwa and Ronald Muwanga have today afternoon been released on bond from Gulu Central Police Station, a day after they were arrested in Arua municipality with NBStv’s John Kibalizi and Julius Bakabaage and Yasin Kawuma of the Daily Monitor.

Ssempala however, told Radio Sapientia that they are to petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola against acts of violence upon journalists and also seek security attention in such contested elections.

He added that the network has embarked on identifying individual police officers who involved in torturing these journalists during the arrests so that they are sued in courts of law.
