Human Rights Network (HURINET) has condemned the increasing torture actions in the country and called on the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee to conduct investigations against Nalufenya detention centre located in Jinja district.

Addressing Journalists at their offices in Kampala, HURINET Executive Director Mohammed Ndifuna says the country needs accountability on police’s actions as well as the investigations of former AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi’s murder is concerned.

This follows reports that Kaweesi’s murder suspects include the Kamwenge Town Council Mayor Godfrey Byamukama were allegedly tortured and seriously wounded in custody at Nalufenya Police Station.

Ndifuna further says they need the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) also to publish the report of their investigation about Nalufenya as a matter of urgency after the visit to facilitate accountability.

Meanwhile, the Action Coalition of Torture Victims (ACTV) Head of Program Esther Nabwire urges government to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture allows free and unlimited access to all detention facilities in the county for speciation by Human Rights bodies.

She adds that Civil Society Organization are required to write seeking permission of visiting detention centers which at times becomes meaningless since the process provides space for the concerned agencies to prepare for them.
