The Chief Justice, Bart Katureebe has said Ugandans must do a lot to regain Uganda’s image that is always defined by atrocities of former president Idi Amin Dada.

Speaking during the celebrations to commemorate 70 years since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, at the Uganda railways ground in Kampala Katureebe said it’s sad for Uganda to be defined by the atrocities of Amini that were characterized by mass killings, torture and violation of human rights and incidents like those of Arua keep aiding the name tag which is bad.

The Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Med Kaggwa said despite great strides made in advancement of human rights in Uganda, Uganda is still challenged by some security officers and agencies that have been on the spot of torturing civilians.

Human Rights Network Uganda’s Patrick Kaboyo said there are many impediments to observation of human rights in the country including brutal arrest and detention of human rights defenders that is accounted to government agencies.

The International Commission of Jurists in Geneva estimates that between 80,000 and 300,000 people were killed by Amin during his eight year tenure as president of Uganda whereas Amnesty international puts the figure at 500,000.
