The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martine Okoth Ochora has broken silence on kidnaps and murders in the country saying they have established visibility studies against the ongoing criminalities.

The latest wave of kidnaps and murders in the country has continually caused tension among Ugandans many of whom are accusing security agencies of failing to wipe away these atrocities which are mainly targeting women.

Addressing the media at Police headquarters in Nagguru- Kampala, Ochora says that of the 42 registered kidnap cases in the past four months, 7 of them have resulted into murders involving eight victims.

He adds that 20 of them are self kidnaps, 8 victims have been rescued and yet 7 are still missing with kidnappers asking for ransom.

He further revealed that kidnapers mainly demand for ransom to finance terrorism activities while others are looking for virgin girls for ritual sacrifices.

Although police have not pointed out a single terrorism group believed to be behind the kidnaps for ransom, they are yet to make conclusive investigations to confirm their findings.

Ochola also noted that kidnapers are also targeting school going children which has put parents on tension for fear of their children’s lives.

Besides cautioning parents on their children’s safety, the police are yet to embark on a country-wide campaign that will see students equipped with safety tips.

Police have now established a 24/7 Centre at its headquarters in Naguru for rapid response to cases of Kidnap. The public has also been advised to call on the provided toll free lines for help in case one is kidnapped which include; 0800199990, 0800199991,0800199992
