Police in Greater Masaka region is overwhelmed by the number of inmates in their cells as the judicial officers’ standoff over salary increment and incentives to aid their operations enters a second week.

Yesterday, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Kahinda Otafiire asked the striking judicial officers to return to work as Government works out modalities to address their salary demands but the strikers have refused until their demands are fulfilled.

According to the Southern Region Police Spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the ongoing strike by judicial officers has hit police hard with several of their cells already filled up because suspects are no longer produce in court.

Kigozi says they have resolved to release on bond suspects with minor offences but are finding it hard to feed those held for capital offenders like murder, aggravated defilement, rape and aggravated robbery.

Human right activists fear that with the ongoing strike, residents might resort to mob justice to resolve their differences.

Already residents of Kabobera trading centre in Masaka district are in fear following last night’s attack by yet unknown thugs who hacked two people; Godfrey Mujumba and Ali Kulabako dead, while a handful of others critically injured are receiving treatment at Masaka referral Hospital.
