Kampala Capital city Authority (KCCA) has commenced public consultations about the proposed ordinance on child protection.

The ordinance in the offing seeks to create a more child friendly environment in Kampala and setting punitive measures to end the problem of street children.

Kampala is home to over 40,000 street children most of whom have turned criminals and a hub of all unbecoming behavior.

To address this growing vice and threat, KCCA is drafting an ordinance to tighten the existing child protection laws.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with local leaders in Rubaga Division, Zaina Nakubulwa the Probation and Social Welfare Officer KCCA Rubaga Division says they are ready to avert the street children problem and those who aid their stay or traffic them to the streets.

In the same meeting, local leaders include Councilors, LC chairpersons, representatives of women’s councils and youth expressed their views about the ordinance.
