Members of parliament on the parliamentary finance committee have grilled the secretary to the treasury Keith Muhakanizi for having taken over the role of paying court awards to claimants which is contrary to his roles and obligations.

This was raised by the committee chairman Henry Musasizi after realizing that Ministry of finance is paying directly claimants court awards which is the responsibility of the Ministry of justice and constitutional Affair.

However, the secretary to Treasury Keith Muhakanizi said that the former Attorney directed him to cater for the payment of court awards, and no one has ever challenged that order.

Keith further revealed to the committee that the court awards had reached over a trillion shillings but he has been negotiating with the claimants for this amount to reduce through discounting the interest rate saving the government about 200 billion shillings.

The awards have accrued from a number of court cases that have been lost out by government.
