At least 105 women have registered for the free obstetric Fistula camp at Kitovu Missionary Hospital in Masaka district since this year begun.

The number was recorded in the first five months of this year, according to Reverend Sister Imelda Nabukalu, the Director Fistula program at Kitovu Hospital.

Dr. Nabukalu says 49 of these have since undergone surgical repairs and have successfully healed of their conditions.

This brings to over 5,300 fistula repairs that have been conducted at the hospital since the project started in 1988.

She observes that the number of fistula cases have increased compared to last year, a situation that raises concern that the problem could be bigger in the community.

Fistula, is a medical condition involving the involuntary flow of urine and sometimes stool among women, mainly caused by obstructed labor.

Sister Doctor, Pauline Namirembe, a senior surgeon and the assistant hospital in charge, says they are now faced with a challenge of feeding malnourished children born by fistula victims, a cost the project had not budgeted for.
