The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura has removed the commandant of the Land Police Protection Unit (LPPU) SSP Charles Mutungi and replaced him with a senior commissioner Christine Nanding with an order for a total overhaul of the unit.

Mutungi has been sent for a course at Police College at Bwebajja in Wakiso District. Nanding has been the deputy director in the directorate of police legal and human rights.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth-Ochola has been tasked to heads a committee that is going to vet LPPU new officers and the overhaul exercise with other senior officers like the directors of Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Crime Intelligence and the Commandant of Professional Standards Unit.

There are allegations that officers in the LPPU have been conniving with land grabbers to evict people in the rural areas and this comes at a time when the land commission of inquiry lead by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire is getting to the grip of those involved in land scandals.

Meanwhile, earlier on Kayihura rushed to Kapchorwa on learning about the brutal attack of a police officer last evening PC Charles Olany 33, by unknown assailants who slit his throat with a panga and went away with his SMG rifle.

Olanya had been deployed at a trade show at Boma grounds in Kapchorwa Municipality.

Police have started investigations into the incident.
