Members of Parliament from Lango sub region have expressed mixed reactions over the proposals to amend Article 26 of the constitution to enable government to compulsorily acquire land for public projects.

Cecilia Atim Ogwal, Dokolo Woman MP says the proposed bill is aimed at forcefully grabbing people’s land in Northern and Eastern Uganda because the central region that is Buganda does no longer have enough land challenging the public not to allow such a bill go through in case they bring a referendum.

The Erute South MP Jonathan Odur, says the plans to amend the constitution are a ploy by government to force its way on people’s land given the way the bill is being rushed and government is on record for not respecting court orders and there will be no way it will compensate someone who wins a court case after taking the land for government projects.

The Dokolo South MP Felix Okot Ogong sharply opposes the bill promising to mobiles people to fight it using all available means because government has evil mind about it.

However, , the Lands and Urban Development Minister Betty Amongi while defending the bill last week disclosed that government has lost about 349 billion shillings in the past two financial years due to delayed implementation of infrastructure projects hence the need for the law.
