Agrochemical shops in Luweero Town Council have run out of stock for recommended pesticides for the control and management of the deadly fall army worm.

Luweero is among the 65 districts in Uganda hit by the army worm where it has devastating acres of maize gardens.

The Ministry of Agriculture recommended four types of pesticides for farmers in an effort to kill and stop the spread of maize army worm. They Include Striker, Rocket, Dudu Fenos And Engeo which has run out of stock due to overwhelming damand.

The Luweero District Agriculture Officer Haruna Kasirye has confirmed the reports of pesticide stock outs describing it as dangerous to maize farmers. Kasirye explains that some farmers were looking for insecticide for the second phase of spraying which is crucial to eradication of the fall army worm but its absence put them at risk of losses.

Solomon Seruwo, a crop scientist of Bukoola Chemical Industries confirmed there were no enough pesticides for sale however the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Vincent Ssempijja says that the recommended suppliers will deliver another stock from India within the next two weeks to arrest the situation.

Meanwhile the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has sent a wakeup call to Ugandans to save the environment to fight hash climate changesĀ  which effects have cost the country.

Kadaga says a double effort in tree planting and sensitizing the public on its treasures must be intensified right from school where school gardens must be encouraged with fruit trees

She was meeting the youth Go Green club in preparations for the 2017 UN-AFRICAN youth conference on climate change to be hosted by Uganda in August this year where over 500 delegates are expected to participate.
