Over 500 assistant lecturers of Makerere University are up in arms against management over discrepancies in the salary structure.

The affected lecturers were contracted under the M6 salary scale. However, they accuse the University managers of manipulating the scale to introduce M6.1 and M6.2.

Under the current arrangement, lecturers fall under M6.1 and the assistant lecturers are under M6.2 which entitles them to a salary of 5.7 million shillings for none science teaching staff and 6.1 million shillings for science lectures.

Whereas those under M6.2, non- science earn 4 million yet science teaching lectures get 4.5 million.

However, under the new salary structure released by the Public Service Ministry, science lecturers under the M6.1 salary scale will receive Shillings 6.5 million from Shillings 6.1 million while their none science colleagues will earn Shillings 6 million from Shillings 5.7 million and those under M6.2 scale go from Shillings 4.5 million to 4.8 million for science and 4.3 million from 4 million shillings for none science colleagues.

The assistant lecturer in the department of Development Studies at Makerere University, Frank Mwebaze Mature says they want answers to whose interests the salary scales were changed.

The lecturers demand that salaries for lecturers in all public universities be streamline according to the NCHE standards and are ready to make a pronouncement on the next course of action after the Makerere University Academic Staff general assembly tomorrow.
