Makerere University has recalled 69 degrees after a comprehensive audit of marks of students over the past several years following allegations of forged or altered results.

The university has also summoned the recipients of the recalled degrees to appear before the committee that’s investigating irregularities in marks and academic awards headed by Dr Damalie Naggitta-Musoke, the former dean of the School of Law.

The decision follows the scrutiny of 60,000 degrees the institution has awarded and in her preliminary report the disparities were linked to students’ results being altered at Senate level after lecturers, college and school registrars’ submissions.

In the last graduation a total of 50 grandaunts were removed from the graduation booklet and over 14,000 transcripts withheld until they are clearly verified of their results.

The deputy vice chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, Prof William Bazeyo had planned to make a formal statement to the public this evening but later called it off following a students’ demonstration over the planned move in parliament by the NRM members to present a private members bill on the lifting of the presidential term limit with the amendment of article 102b.

The anti-riot police have been deployed at the entire campus to stop students turning rowdy.
