Newly elected legislator Michael Mawanda has been sworn in this afternoon as parliament commenced to debate the age limit reports, starting another term as the Member of Parliament for Igara East constituency.

Mawanda, an independent candidate, won a by-election held on Thursday with 16,209 votes defeating incumbent Andrew Martial who polled 12,991 votes.

The race attracted six candidates among others, Benjamin Katana; another independent candidate came third with 1,477 votes while Christine Ninsiima, a member of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change managed to get 497 votes.

The by-election followed the nullification of the election of Andrew Martial as the area MP citing voter bribery and uttering of defamatory statements in the 2016 general election.

The judgment was based on a petition filed by Micheal Mawanda, his political opponent, challenging the outcome of the 2016 elections.

His oath was administered by the Clerk to Parliament Jane Kibirige.
