State Minister for Health in charge of General Duties, Sarah Opendi in a disguised move has netted a couple of corrupt medical workers in Kampala.

The Minister dressed up in a burka (Muslim attire) this afternoon went to China- Naguru Hospital Kampala personally to investigate reports of alleged corruption and Two health workers didn’t survive, they were arrested for attempted soliciting of a bribe from her whom they thought was an ordinary patient.

The arrested are a laboratory technician and a nursing assistant and were handed over to police for necessary action.

Minister Opendi after the operation reiterated that services in Government Health Facilities are meant to be free of charge and no patient should be charged any shilling unless they are in the Private wing.

This confirms a report released by the Transparency International in 2016 where Corruption Perception Index (CPI) that ranked Uganda in 151 of 176 countries that are the most corrupt in the world.

The chairperson for transparency International Jose Ugaz in the report attributes the high levels of corruption to deficiency of opportunities for all which has created a vicious circle between corruption and unequal distribution of power in society.
