Kalungu West Member of Parliament Joseph Ssewungu has reiterated his readiness never to allow the NRM members of parliament to push for the constitutional amendment of article 102b to lift the presidential age limit.

Ssewungu while addressing a gathering at Bishop Ddungu gardens Nsambya said the Presidential Term and Age limit where ideal principals of democratic principles thought of by the CA members while drafting the 1995 constitution although it was later revealed by those in power to have targeted historical leaders not to contest for presidency.

Ssewungu cited historical politicians like; the former Democratic Party Leader Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, the late Conservative Party Leader Joash Mayanja Nkangi and the late Apollo Milton Obote of the Uganda People’s Congress who were later thought of as the targets and after realizing that they can no longer participate in politics the National Resistance Movement is amending those constitutional provisions in favour or their leadership.

He said such a move is an abuse to the constitution intended to create dictatorship in Uganda, urging the supporters to borrow a leaf from Kenya which has exercised a high degree of democracy in the whole world.

Ssewungu faulted the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kagadaga for compromising her leadership and accepted parliament to be overrun by security forces on Tuesday September 26th that left the 25 suspended legislators beaten and many sustained serious injuries.

He said besides using article 80 of the parliamentary rules and procedure that allows MPs to use all available means to defend their rights, Kadaga would have used her wisdom and suspend parliament on that day than ordering unauthorized security forces to overrun parliament to eject the suspended MPs.

Uganda’s East African Legislative Assembly member Fred Mukasa Mbidde said although his movement is restricted by the numerous police bonds slapped on him over his constitutional right, he will not relent to traverse Uganda urging the public to force its MPs not to support amendments to article 102b of the constitution on presidential age limit.
