Tempers flared today in Parliamentary Defence and Internal Affairs Committee over the suspects recently named in the murder of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Felix Kaweesi who was killed in with his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver Geoffrey Mambewa in cold blood on the morning of March 17th.

On Monday this week, 13 suspects were produced before the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court and charged with murder, terrorism and aggravated robbery.

The accused include Abdul-Rashid Mbaziira, Aramazan Noordin Higenyi, Yusuf Mugerwa, Bruhan Balyejusa, Umar Maganda and Ahmada Shaban Ssenfuka. Others are Hassan Tumusiime, Ibrahim Kissa, Osman Muhammed Omar, Hamidu Magambo, Abdu-Majid Ojerere, Joshua Kyambadde Magezi and Sheikh Musa Abubaker Ntende.

Appearing before the Defence and Internal Affairs’ Committee of Parliament today (Wednesday), the State Minister for Internal Affairs Obiga Kania together with the Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura clashed with the Shadow Minister for Internal Affairs Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi who insisted that those accused of Kaweesi’s murder had been earlier arrested before the actual murder took place.

Kivumbi threatened to name the suspects before the committee saying that they had been arrested earlier and now police parades them as new arrests.

He was, however, rudely cut short by the Junior Minister Kania saying Parliamentary Committee had been reduced to a sub-committee of court investigating Kaweesi’s death insisting that the late AIGP’s murder was serious and painful which should not be trivialized.

Internal Affairs Committee Chairperson Judith Nabakooba ruled that Kivumbi could not read the names openly and advised that he approached the minister or the IGP in confidence over the matter.

This angered MP Kivumbi who faulted Nabakooba for what he called dictatorship saying that she cannot rule on the matter in regard to people’s rights.

During an interview with journalists after the meeting, Kivumbi could only reveal two names citing Nooridin Ramadan and Ali Bigere as some of the detained suspects that are allegedly arrested before Kaweesi’s death.

Kayihura asked legislators and public to trust the police in regard to Kaweesi murder investigations saying that no wrong suspects are arrested.
