President Yoweri Museveni has directed that fallen former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Chairman Edward Rurangaranga be accorded an official burial for the contribution he made to the country.

This was revealed by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda at a meeting he convened at the Office of the Prime Minister today to plan for the burial of the former legislator, minister and local leader.

Rurangaranga, 85, passed on Monday night, at his home in Kitagata, Sheema District.

The meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister was attended by members of Rurangaranga’s family led by the widow, Winifred Rurangaranga and children, the leadership of UPC led by Party President Jimmy Akena, and Government representatives, including tourism minister Prof Ephraim Kamuntu, Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa, Public Service Minister, Muruli Mukasa and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija.

Earlier, Rurangaranga’s body was received at the UPC headquarters at Uganda House by party President Jimmy Akena in a company of other members including Gold Ruyondo and Mzee Yona Kanyomozi.

Ruyondo eulogized the late as a determined man that help to build the party which developed Uganda and structured the direction of the country.

The former UPC party chairman succumbed to hypertension yesterday morning.

The leader who served as UPC Minister of State for Local Government (1981-1985), according to accounts by his widow, Winfred collapsed and died while taking tea at around 7:00pm.

Born in 1932, Rurangaranga died at the age of 85, leaving a widow and 8 children – three boys and five girls. He will be laid to rest in Kitanjojo village, Kitagata in Sheema district. The UPC party spokesman Michael Osinde explained.
