The National Drug Authority (NDA) Executive Director Donna Asiimwe Kusemererwa has threatened to compel all drug shop owners operating in Kampala to either re-locate further away from the pharmacies or close.

Responding to questions from the journalists in the media –NDA engagement at the authority’s headquarters in Kampala, Kusemererwa says that the policy that empowers them to close unregistered and defiant drug shops in Kampala has been in existence for the last four years.

Kusemererwa says under the new policy, all drug shops located close to pharmacies, required to relocate to other areas where there are few pharmacies especially in villages.

According to the National Drug Policy Authority Act, a drug shop is supposed to be located in a distance of not less than 1.5 kilometers from a Pharmacy.

By law, the drug shops were a temporary measure to provide service in the absence of pharmacies.

By 2017 there were 478 pharmacies licensed to operate in Kampala.

Each of the pharmacies is expected to serve at least 3,172 going by the current population of the city of 1,516,210 people according to the 2014 Population Census.
