The new Mulago Specialized Referral Hospital Executive Director Dr. Baterana Byaruhanga has disclosed the failure to be allocated with 100bnshs that could purchase medicine to enable patients acquire free services.

Byaruhanga says that they only received 13.6bnshs under the National Medical Stores for drugs which could have patients paying their medical bill once the hospital commences its operation after the renovation and rehabilitation is completed later this year.

In May this year, the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga opposed the proposal by the management of Mulago hospital to charge patients saying the services should be 90 percent free to Ugandans since it’s their taxes being used to renovate the hospital.

However, visiting the hospital this morning the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) Chairperson for Eastern Region Capt Mike Mukula applauded the ongoing renovations saying that he is unsure whether government could committee itself to provide free services instead can introduce health insurance scheme.

The USD24 million facilities is jointly funded by Africa Development Bank and the government of Uganda and constructed by Arab contractors.
