The Opposition in parliament has resolved to launch a countrywide campaign against the proposed constitutional amendment of the Land act.

The new amendment proposes for the compulsory acquisition of land by government for public development without the owner’s consent on compensation.

According to Leader of Opposition Winfrey Kiiza, the program will start with Masaka district and later Kampala followed by Wakiso and other parts of the country.

Kizza says the bill is unconstitutional because it tampers with the constitutional right to own property adding that government wants to fight its political opponents by grabbing their property under the disguise of public development.

She warned police not to attempt stopping their campaign because MP’s consultation of within their constituencies is granted by law.

Last week, the Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana tabled the bill amidst shouts from both the opposition and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs, which sent a signal that the bill is destined to be highly controversial.
