The Opposition has declared next week, a week to stand against the constitutional amendment especially on article 102b that aimed at lifting the presidential age limit.

Addressing Journalists at parliament today, a group of opposition Members of Parliament led by their Butambala County counterpart, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi disclosed plans by the government side to table the ‘Age Limit’ report tabled before parliament on Tuesday next week.

The other legislators included Roland Mugume, Robinah Ssentongo, Latif Ssebaggala, Moses Kasibante, Gashom Sizomu, Joseph Sewungu, Francis Mwijukye, Harold Muhindo and Jackson Mbaju.

The legislators noted that the Ugandan people had spoken clearly about the bill, saying”We are declaring next week as ‘Togikwatako’ week.

‘Togikwatako’ is a term that was coined by politicians opposed to the proposed scrapping of the presidential age limit.

They eventually selected red ribbons as a symbol of their defiance against the move of scrapping of Article 102(b), which caps the presidential age at between 35-75 years.

Kivumbi says that for the next one week starting on Monday December 11, 2017 they will paint the entire country red.

He also noted voters in Kampala, Wakiso and its neighborhood will visit legislators residing in their areas to lobby them not to move away from their proposals during the age limit consultations.

The MPs also warned the Parliament Police and Sergeant at Arms that they don’t expect any foreign security operatives at parliament next week as the case was in September during the tabling of the presidential Age Limit motion.

It is said there is also a move to lift the parliamentary term of office from 5 to 7 years.
