Members of Parliament have approved the proposal for the extension of Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government’s positions term from five to seven years.

If the MPs insist that such an amendment starts with the current parliament it will require a referendum but if it starts with the next parliament that will be in place after the 2021 general elections it will be just fitting in the main laws governing the country.

This means that president Museveni stands higher chances to lead Uganda from 2021 to 2035 in the new two 7 year term that has also been supported in the article 105.

Michael Tumusiime, the National Resistance Movement’s Mbarara Municipality MP moved the motion to have the term of all elective positions increased to 7 years with effect from the current parliament.

During the parliamentary discussion reviews for Age Limit Bill Clauses this evening, the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga clarified that it’s Parliament with the duty to legislate for the whole country on all issues of governance.

The Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana says change of term of Parliament, President and other elective positions is for posterity adding that changes have no financial implications on budget.

The Budabiri West MP Nathan Nandala Mafabi rejects the proposal to extend term of Parliament, President and other elective positions saying voters only agreed to 5year term.

Presidential, Parliamentary and other elective position term extension require a referendum that is expected to be organized by the Electoral Commission very soon.

The move to extend the term of elective office from five to seven years came to the limelight early this month when Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga disclosed his plans to table a Private Members Bill that seeks to extend the term of all elective offices.
