The Parliamentary Appointments Committee has approved Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo as the new Deputy Chief Justice.

Justice Owiny-Dollo is taking over from Justice Stephen Kavuma, who is set to retire by the end of this month, after clocking 70 years the mandatory retirement age for Judges in Uganda.

Justice Richard Buteera and Paul Mugamba have also been approved to serve on the Supreme Court.

After more than two decades of private legal practice, Owiny-Dollo, 61, joined the bench in 2008 as a High Court judge, after quitting elective politics following his loss to Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo in a parliamentary race for Agago County.

He has served as resident judge in Fort Portal, the International Crimes Division of the High Court and the High Court Execution and Bailiffs Division.

Among the cases handled by Owiny-Dollo is the famous 2010 terrorism case against the masterminds who bombed revelers of the World Cup final at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds and Kabalagala in Kampala that claimed about 74 lives.

He has told the media at parliament that Kenya’s Supreme Court ruling that nullified the presidential election of August 8th has left lessons and a landmark to Uganda’s Judiciary. And about his office he promised professional performance but not as an NRM cadre as its alleged.
