The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has clarified that the new introduced charges of Shs300, 000 for patients seeking for radiotherapy treatment, is part of the avenue to raise1.9bnshs non-tax revenue to support the institute.

UCI is budgeted to be operating under 8.6bnshs annually with a responsibility of contributing 1.9bnshs.

The radiotherapy treatment was previously free-of-charge but recently the institute indicated new charges for each patient to pay in order access all the 25 radiotherapy sessions.

The Executive Director Uganda Cancer Institute Dr. Jackson Orem says that patients will also have to pay 10,000shs for the scan and x-ray respectively to enable UCI meet government policy for entities and agencies to raise money to supplement their budget allocations.

Meanwhile Private Ugandan patients will pay Shs500, 000 and the international ones who account for 15% of the total number of patients the institute receives will pay Shs7.4m for all the 25 sessions of Radio Therapy.
