Police in Budaka District has arrested three Members of Parliament for allegedly stating a demonstration over the sorry state of Mbale- Tirinyi- Nakalama road.

The MPs were arrested at Kakori Trading Centre in Budaka District, 10 kilometers from Mbale town and they include, Budaka district Woman MP Pamela Nasiyo, John Baptist Nambeshe of Manjiya County in Bududa District and Silas Aogon, the Kumi Municipality MP.

The Police Operations Officer, Moses Kazibwe says the MPs were arrested for holding an unlawful assembly contrary to the Public Order Management Act and they had ill-intentions of inciting the public over the matter that is being handled by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

Early Monday morning, Taxi drivers operating along Kampala-Gulu highway staged a strike protesting over multiple and daily charges that affected hundreds of travelers.

Some of the taxi drivers reached to an extent of mounting barricades in Kawempe, Matugga, Wobulenzi and Kakerenge towns and threw stones at other taxis that were ferrying passengers.

It took the intervention of anti-riot Police led by Luweero District Police Commander, Paul Wataka to calm the situation and arrest six drivers from Kakerenge trading center to clear traffic

In his July 22nd letter to the Prime minister, President Museveni directed that taxi operators be charged once and opposed to the daily dues.

However, the Presidential directive has never been implemented district leaders claiming that they have not received any communication in writing and according to Paul Mukungu, the Luweero Town Council Chairperson proposed for a dialogue between local governments and Prime Minister on how to proceed on the matter.
