The Uganda Private Medical Practitioners (SOUPMP) have opposed the campaign by the National Drug Authority-NDA of phasing out drug shops from Kampala.

SOUPMP, an association of over 400 registered private medical doctor’s claim that it is impossible to allow pharmacies to operate in Kampala yet they are expensive to the surrounding residents.

Last month, NDA Executive Secretary Dona Kusemererwa declared an operation to phase out drug shops and only allow 500 licensed pharmacies to operate in Kampala to serve more than 1.5 million people.

Addressing the media at Nsambya, SOUPMP Chairperson Dr. Michael Lulume Bayiga says that drug shops should only be guided on how to operate instead of phasing them out of Kampala.

However, Dr. Zubair Kisambira the owner of the Family Clinic at Lusaze Mapeera explains that many private doctors can’t afford pharmacies they are expensive to operate, procure a license and hiring a pharmacist among other demands.

The Doctors also want government to stop arresting and closing health facilities of private practitioners before the case in court over the trade licenses is determined.
