Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) needs over 1.2 billion Shillings to continue its humanitarian operations in Bududa district, an area in Eastern Uganda that was devastated by landslides last week.

The tragedy occurred when River Suume burst its banks following a heavy downpour and a landslide that rolled boulders through villages in Bukalasi Sub County.

Close to 50 lives were lost, and hundreds of others left destitute with no food, shelter and clothing, while others are still missing.

According to a report by the Uganda Red Cross Society-URCS, the landslide affected 139 households with a population of 695 people, 278 of whom are children under 5 years.

15 people are admitted to hospitals and another 16 are believed to still be missing.

The humanitarian agency had so far used 70 million Shillings on rescue operations in the villages of Naposhi, Nalutumu, Wanjenuwa, Suume, Lwanda, Mayika and Nalwanza that were affected by the landslide.

But Robert Kwesiga, the General Secretary of the Uganda Red Cross Society says that more money is needed to help the affected people in the district at least 5,000 people in four districts of Bududa, Manafwa, Butaleja and Namisindwa need assistance.
