His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Rev Fr. Joseph Oliach Eciru, a Professor at St. Mary’s National Major Seminary Ggaba as the new Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese(right).

Fr. Eciru was born in 1970, ordained priest in2003, served as a teacher and formatter at St. Paul’s Major Seminary, Kinyamasika and is currently lecturing at St. Mary’s National Seminary Ggaba.

Soroti Catholic Diocese located within the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tororo in the Eastern Part of Uganda last had a full ordinary in  June 2007 when the sitting Bishop Rt. Rev. Bishop Erasmus Desiderius Wandera retired, having served for 27 years since November 1980.

He was succeeded by Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo from June 2007 to January 2014 when he was appointed Archbishop of Tororo although he remained as the Apostolic Administrator of Soroti.

This appointment comes as Pope Francis is marking his 6th anniversary since he was elected the 266th Pope on March 13th 2013, successor of Peter to shepherd the Roman Catholic Church in the world that is estimated to have at least 1.2 billion believers.

The Papal appointment was unveiled to the Uganda Episcopal Conference by Fr. Alfred Rayan D’Souz secretary to the Nuciature in Mbuya and the Secretary General Uganda Episcopal Conference Msgr. John Baptist Kauta publicized at exactly 2pm today through Radio Sapientia.
