The high court in Kampala has sentenced the two men accused of murdering a Columbia University student to 30 years imprisonment on each of the two counts; that is murder and aggravated robbery to run concurrently.

The two are; Ronald Mutebi and Geoffrey Lubwama alias Jeff who were convicted last week for murdering Andrew Gatare a 19 year old mechanical engineering student.

According to the high court judge Flavia Anglin Ssenoga, the state proved beyond reasonable doubt that the duo committed the crime, placing both of them at the scene of the crime thus sentencing  them to serve as an example to the would be offenders.

She added that the offences are very grave and the victim was deliberately targeted because of his money and so this sentence serves to teach them that wealth is obtained thru hard work but no thru crime.

Furthermore, she said it would have been 35 years for each count but she deducted the five years the convicts have spent on remand hence the 30 years.

According to prosecution it is alleged that on the New Year’s Eve of 2015, Gatare was attacked at around 2am as he crossed to Nile Avenue by the two men who also robbed him of his mobile phone and wallet.
